Authorities have released the identity of a man shot and killed by a grocery store security guard on Saturday night.

Kansas City police said he was Anthony Trezvant, 56, of Kansas City.

The security guard, who was stabbed during a scuffle with Trezvant, was in serious condition at a hospital on Monday.

The ordeal began shortly before 9 p.m. at the Price Chopper grocery story in Brookside.

The security guard saw Trezvant trying to shoplift and chased Trezvant out of the store and down the street, police said.

About a block away from the store, Trezvant stabbed the security guard with a knife and the security guard shot him, according to investigators.

Paramedics tried to save Trezvant, but he died at a hospital.

"I wish he had just called the police and let them handle it. I wish he hadn't done that. I wish he hadn't taken it in his own hands," said Rosemary Trezvant, Anthony Trezvant's mother.
