KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A security guard shot and killed a man who he saw trying to shoplift at a Price Chopper grocery store, police said.

It happened shortly before 9 p.m. outside the store in Brookside.

The guard chased the man out of the store and down the street.

About a block away from the store, the man stabbed the guard with a knife and the guard shot him.

Paramedics tried to save the man, but he died at a hospital.

The guard was taken to a hospital to be treated for his stab wound.

A neighbor was watching a movie with her husband when they heard the commotion.

"We heard three gunshots, and I was like, 'Was that gunshots?' and I stuck my head out the back deck and saw two gentlemen lying on the sidewalk," Abigail Boindo said.

The security guard was expected to be OK.
