LEAVENWORTH, Kan. -- A 27-year-old man stabbed his 51-year-old stepfather 16 times with a plunger, police said.

Brett Burns' mother told KCTV5 News her son and his family had been staying with them for about a month.

On Sunday, Burns and his wife got into a fight and she took off with their child, his mother said.

The woman said her son left and then came home hours later, intoxicated.

She said he took his anger out on her and her husband, allegedly striking her and attacking the stepfather with the handle of a plunger.

She called police.

Burns was charged Thursday with two counts of attempted murder and criminal threat.
