Amato Focused On Accreditation Challenge

Superintendent Says He's Not Distracted By Rumors

The Kansas City School District's Superintendent spoke out Thursday about a possible shakeup involving his job.

Superintendent Anthony Amato said he is entirely focused on the students of his district and is not letting the board's recent actions distract him.

Earlier this week, the city's school board met to discuss his future, which remains uncertain.

"The school board is my boss. Those are my bosses. I respect them. I have to live by what they want me to do. Whatever they are doing right now, I just have to respect what is going on. I will be patient and wait for the process run its course," Amato said.

Amato's three-year contract expires in June 2009. Questions have been raised lately about whether his tenure will last that long.

When the board met at their lawyers' offices earlier this week, they wouldn't give specifics as to why they were considering Amato's ousting, only saying that discussions will continue.

"The only thing I've heard basically is that they met last week. No, it was this week. They met this week. And they came to no resolution. The board took no action," Amato said.

Amato said he's staying focused on the students and the district's state accreditation this spring.

"I want to be very clear. It's not about the superintendent or teachers or principals or anybody else. It's about the tremendous challenge we have coming up this spring," Amato said.
