BONNER SPRINGS, Kan. -- A copper theft left an entire city in the dark on Friday.About 1,300 customers lost electricity for about two hours in Bonner Springs.Someone cut several ground wires and stole the copper from an electrical substation, and crews had to turn off the electricity to repair the wires, a Westar Energy representative said. The outage changed the daily routine at a convenience store. The store could only accept cash payments for items, and a couple on their way to Topeka, Kan., got stranded because they couldn't use the gas pumps to fill up their tank."I'm out of gas now. Yeah. We stretched it to get here," said John Felman. And on the road, traffic moved slowly because signals stopped working.Police were investigating the copper theft.
