The judge calls it a tragedy all the way around as he sentences a man to 32 years in prison for the murder of a child.

Charles A. Mahone, 40, was handed the sentence after being found guilty of second-degree murder, three counts of child abuse, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and first-degree assault in the death of Aaron, the 18-month-old son of his former girlfriend.

He was convicted last month for what prosecutors and the judge said was a horrible beating and a death by torture of the little boy.

The judge said Mahone killed Aaron and tried to cover it up by causing a single-car accident on Swope Parkway last year. The judge heard from the defendant's family and acknowledged the defendant comes from a loving and educated family but said he had to give the maximum for second-degree murder.

The baby's grandfather said, "I don't know if justice is really served; 32 years is a very small price to pay for the life of an innocent child."

Charles Mahone told the judge and the families that he was sorry for the pain. But he has never admitted he murdered the boy.
