More than 5,000 high school students in the Kansas City, Kan., School District checked out new laptop computers from schools on Tuesday.

Parents paid a $25 insurance fee to lease the Apple MacBook computers -- valued at $1,300 each.

If parents can't afford it, students can work off the fee doing community service.

Software installed on the computers allows them to be used for educational purposes only.

The students keep the computers as long as they're attending school in the district.
