A professional bullrider from Missouri died Saturday night after he was stepped on by a bull after he completed his ride.

Topeka police said Joshua J. "Cody" Brunner, 21, of Warrensburg, Mo., died after he was stepped on by a bull while competing in a United Rodeo Association event. Brunner was taken to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka where he died.

An autopsy was conducted, but results were not available Monday from the Shawnee County coroner's office.

Brunner had completed his eight-second ride and was injured as he dismounted the bull.

Brunner was sixth in earnings for the season, with $1,537 heading into the URA finals Saturday.

"It was a tragic accident," said Clint Tatum, incoming URA president. "We're a tight-knit family. We're all suffering from this loss."

Brunner's mother, Bridget Brunner, described him as a "good, kind-hearted person."

"This is something you don't think is going to happen. You think you're never going to have bury one of your own kids," she said.

The top 15 money earners qualified for Saturday's event.

"These are not some walk-off-the-street wannabe cowboys," Tatum told the Topeka Capital-Journal. "These guys have gone all year and worked hard to get there."

Tatum said there had been few severe injuries at URA events and this was the first death. The URA is based in Yates Center and was established in 1962.

Meanwhile in Ash Flat, Ark., authorities said Zackary Clinton, 17, of Willow Springs, Mo., died Saturday at the Fulton County Hospital after being injured at a rodeo. Ash Flat Police Chief Mike Zeiger said the bull threw the teen to the ground before stepping on his chest.

Clinton was a junior at Willow Springs High School, where he played on the school's baseball team, Principal Jimalee James said.

"He was a very hard worker and a member of our FFA. He was very well liked by all the students and faculty here," James said. "He loved to rodeo. He was a good student and from a wonderful family."

Funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday at Willow Springs High School.
