KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A young woman who gave birth in the bathroom of a McDonald's restaurant left a hospital Tuesday for a trip to downtown -- in police custody.

Police confirmed they took the mother into custody to question her.

She delivered a premature 2-pound boy in the toilet of the McDonald's on Broadway Street in August and flushed the toilet three times, according to police.

The boy survived.

The mother's grandmother said the girl didn't realize she was pregnant or that she'd given birth that day.

She said the mother -- who had been hospitalized with kidney problems following the delivery -- loved her son.

Police expected to forward the case to the Jackson County prosecutor's office for possible criminal charges.
