Raytown police have identified a former Kansas City, Mo., police officer -- an accident investigator -- who died after a motorcycle he was driving collided with a pickup truck.

Steven Weinberg, 57, was driving a motorcycle on Missouri Highway 350 shortly after 5 p.m. Monday, when a pickup entered the highway from 77th Terrace, police said.

Weinberg tried to swerve around the truck, but the motorcycle hit the rear of the pickup, according to authorities.

Weinberg and his passenger, an 80-year-old woman, were thrown from the motorcycle.

They were taken to a hospital, where Weinberg died.

His passenger, Blanch Beard, was listed in serious condition.

The driver of the pickup initially drove the truck away from the scene, but that driver later returned and police arrested the driver.

"There were no signs of alcohol or drug impairment, and the speed of the motorcycle was not a contributing factor," a news release from Raytown police stated.

Authorities didn't release the name of the pickup driver, because Jackson County prosecutors were still reviewing the case.

Weinberg worked for the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department for 23 years.

He and his passenger were on their way to an event for the Blue Knights, a law enforcement motorcycle club.

"He was never happier than when he was riding a motorcycle," said Mike Rowland, Weinberg's friend.

"I was really, really, really blessed when I was able to be his friend," Rowland said.

Weinberg's son patterned his life after his father's, he said.

"I wouldn't be the man I am now if it wasn't for him," David Weinberg said.
