CLINTON, Mo. -- A teenager who police said nearly had her baby stolen from her womb after she responded to an online ad for baby clothes says she's suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, but she feels blessed to have her son, Ethan Damon Howard.
"I think it's definitely changed me to where I can be a better mother," Amanda Howard told reporters at a news conference.Howard, 18, of Clinton, was nine months pregnant when two females, ages 20 and 17, allegedly sprayed her with pepper spray and took her to a Blue Springs, Mo., motel, where police said they planned to cut the baby from her womb and possibly kill her or leave her to die.Her son -- who she described as a good baby -- was born on Aug. 1. He was 6 pounds, 13 ounces. She conducted the news conference, she said, because, "I wanted people to know that I have a healthy, adorable little boy and that I'm doing fairly good with what I should be doing."Prosecutors charged Lauren M. Gash, 20, of Odessa, Mo., and Alisa D. Betts, 17, of Atchison, Kan., with felony kidnapping last month. Gash also faced one count of assault.Gash and Betts both appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 22.KCTV5 News learned Friday that a Jackson County grand jury had returned indictments charging Betts with assault and felonious restraint and Gash with an additional count of assault and one count of felonious restraint.Gash and Betts were expected back in court on Sept. 12.Howard made contact with Gash and Betts through MySpace.com.Once at the motel, Gash allegedly sat on Howard's abdomen and twisted her neck.Betts got cold feet, left the room and called 911, according to court documents.Officers found scissors, an Exacto knife and a tarp in the room, police said."She actually put Amanda on the phone to relate to me the story, and it's just. It's absolutely terrifying," Howard's former stepmother said shortly after prosecutors filed charges. "It was good to hear her voice and to hear that she was doing well and the baby was doing well."Before the alleged incident, Gash allegedly threw herself a baby shower and told her family she'd had a baby."I think that Lauren lied to us all. I'm sorry to say it that way, because I love Lauren as if she was one of my own kids, but something's wrong," Melissa Betts, Alisa Betts' mother, said shortly after prosecutors filed charges. At her news conference Friday, Howard said she'd been overwhelmed with donations. She received so many baby clothes that she donated some of them.
