Police: Gunman Stops Heist To Hand Out Cigarettes

Investigators: Pair Take Opportunity To Steal Merchandise

POSTED: 12:24 pm CDT August 21, 2007
UPDATED: 4:57 pm CDT August 21, 2007

A gunman holding up a convenience store halted his robbery to wait on a couple who eagerly accepted a pack of smokes and other items without paying, police said.

The store’s surveillance video captured the bizarre robbery early Monday morning at the Fast Stop convenience store at 705 E. 75th St., and the details were spelled out in a police report.

On the tape, a female was seen approaching the gunman with money in her hand and asking him for Newport cigarettes.

The gunman then reached into the overhead cigarette container and handed her a pack. He could clearly be seen holding a shotgun and emptying the register. She didn't try to pay for the cigarettes, and he didn't take her money in the video.

The female's male companion then approached the gunman and asked for something, then the gunman gave him a display pack of what appeared to be individually wrapped cigars, like Swisher Sweets.

The male didn't try to pay for the item, then the male and female were seen leaving the store, carrying "other items, such as drinks, that were obviously not paid for either," according to the police report.

Police characterized the male and female as subjects of interest. It wasn't clear whether they were customers or if they were somehow involved in the robbery.

In addition to those two people, two males were inside the store at the time of the robbery. Initially, when the gunmen enter the store, they put their hands up, but they “do not look overly alarmed” and they didn't try to leave the store.

When it’s apparent that the two gunmen were getting ready to leave the store, the two males left the store and walked northbound across the store parking lot and across East 75th Street.

Police also characterized them as subjects of interest. Before the robbery, one of them purchased a cigar while the other waited by the door.

After the robbery, the gunmen ran in a northwesterly direction from the store.

One of them was armed with a pistol gripped shotgun. The other was armed with a handgun.

One of the gunmen was wearing light blue jeans with a repeated shadow pattern of marijuana plants. He had a goatee and thick, braided hair that was in a ponytail and two side pigtails.

The other was wearing a black baseball cap covered with multiple major league baseball logos , which -- coincidentally, a detective said -- was a similar hat to the one the male who got cigars from the gunman was wearing.

Police urged anyone with any information about the robbery to call the TIPS hot line at 816-474-TIPS.
