Man: Suspect Used To Baby-Sit His Kids

KCTV5 News reporter Tom Wait spoke with a man who said a teen accused in a plot to kidnap a pregnant woman and steal her baby was his kids' baby sitter.

Dustin Kuhnert said the teen, 17-year-old Alisa Betts, was his neighbor in Atchison, Kan. And Kuhnert said he trusted his neighbor to take care of his two kids.

"I never gave it a thought, but now that I think back, I realize she was claiming my kids as her own," said Kuhnert.

On Tuesday, Betts was led out of court in handcuffs. She's one of two teens accused of kidnapping a nine-month-pregnant teen so they could steal her unborn baby.

Kuhnert told KCTV5 News that over the past year, he had Betts watch his children while he and his wife were away at work. During that time, he said, Betts spent hours online and she told them many times that she was pregnant.

"She said that she was pregnant. She tells people this. Come to find out, she's not. One minute she is, one minute she's not," said Kuhnert.

Betts' neighbor said the teen even acted the part. "She put on a front, said she had pains and so on and so forth," he said.

Police said Betts and her alleged partner, 19-year-old Lauren Gash, brought the victim, Amanda Howard, to a Blue Springs motel, where she was bound and gagged. Police said they saved her in the nick of the time.

Police said Betts got cold feet during the kidnapping and she called police. They arrived just in the nick of time to save Howard, officials said.

Betts and Gash were taken into custody.
