Kansas City police are honoring 15 detectives and a sergeant Tuesday for their roles in the "Precious Doe" case.

The detectives of Homicide Squad No. 1020 each received the Unit Citation Award. Their sergeant received a Certificate of Commendation for leading the investigation.

The four-year investigation led to charges in the killing of a 4-year-old girl who was found decapitated in 2001.

Police identified "Precious Doe" as Erica Michelle Green.

Prosecutors charged her mother, Michelle Johnson, and stepfather, Harrell Johnson, in her killing.

Harrell Johnson was charged with first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death and endangering the welfare of a child. His trial is set for next February.

Prosecutors charged Michelle Johnson with second-degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child. Her trial is set for October.
