Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Nephew Reflects On Uncle's Legacy

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis professor, Rev. Derek King Sr., is the oldest living male blood relative of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who died when King was 14.Derek King recently reflected on the life of his famous uncle, whose legacy is in his blood. King said the time around Martin Luther King Jr. Day is always a special time for his family, WRTV in Indianapolis reported.Dr. King is simply known as "Uncle M.L." to Derek King."I didn't know I was Martin Luther King's nephew. All I knew is that he was a good man trying to do good things," Derek King said, reflecting on his youth.Derek King teaches religion at Martin University in Indianapolis. He also assists with services at Ebenezer Baptist Church. King said he wants to carry on his uncle's dream."There are some things wrong in America, but there is far more right in America to me than there is wrong," King said.King said desegregation is the most important accomplishment his uncle played a large role in."The only barriers that separate people are what is in their hearts," King said.King said he thinks the economy and HIV are major problems that still exist. He also believes that raising competent children is essential."Everybody can't be a football player, professional basketball player, can't get a record deal. We need some scientists, some more skilled physicians," King said. "We are going to need some honest politicians.""We need another movement. The country needs another movement. We have movers, but we don't have movement."
