Man Convicted In Hate-Crime Murder Gets Life

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A federal jury has decided that a Kansas City man convicted in the hate-crime murder of a black pedestrian should spend the rest of his life in prison.They decided Gary Eye shouldn't be given the opportunity for parole.Gary Eye and Steven Sandstrom were on trial for killing William McCay in 2005 in what prosecutors alleged was a violation of his civil right to walk down a street unmolested because of his race.McCay was black. Eye and Sandstrom are white.
Both defendants were convicted of four capital crimes, including murder, firearms violations and witness tampering. Both also were convicted of arson and obstruction of justice for burning a car used in the shooting.The jury will now decide whether Sandstrom should be sentenced to death or life in prison.
