GRANDVIEW, Mo. -- A local food pantry had to close when they had nothing left to give, organizers said.Salvation Army officials said they are seeing a record number of families coming to the pantry at 6111 E. 129th St. With the increased need and not enough donations, they were forced to shut the pantry down.Venus Domerese came to the Grandview food pantry once a month to feed her three teenage boys. She was caught by surprise when she saw the sign Wednesday that indicated the pantry was closed until further notice."My husband works in construction, so it's real slow right now, so we need extra help. Money just isn't going far enough, and food is real expensive right now," said Domerese.Captain Patricia Grindle said in 15 years, she's never seen it this bad."We have about 550 individuals coming in a month's time, which is up about 300, 250 to 300, more now than we see in a month's time. And that is what has led to the depletion on the shelves," Grindle said.Domerese said she hopes the community will listen to their plea for help. She said her family can't afford to be picky."Lots of people are in the same boat I am. It doesn't take much. It doesn't have to be expensive food. Just food," Domerese said. The Salvation Army has seven other pantries in the metro area that are hurting, officials said.
