KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- A public hearing about proposed casinos for Wyandotte County continued Thursday at the Kansas City, Kansas Community College Theatre at 7250 State Ave.Four companies are fighting to win a contract to build a resort casino in the county, and they're presenting their proposals to the Kansas Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board.Once the board awards the contract to one of the companies, a temporary building could be in a place in Wyandotte County in the next 10 months. The ideas vary from a golf course and casino to a waterpark/riverwalk casino to a Hard Rock casino and hotel overlooking Kansas Speedway.
The same company that developed the Kansas City Power & Light district is proposing the Hard Rock idea to give NASCAR fans a place to stay and gamble. The waterpark/riverwalk resort casino would be designed to draw a family crowd.Another idea would include golf courses in Kansas City, Kan., and in Edwardsville."We're absolutely excited, and I think this is a great day for the citizens of Wyandotte County," said Mike Taylor, of the Unified Government. "They've waited a long, long time for this, and to be able to compete with the riverboat casinos across the state line."On Friday, members of the public can testify before the seven-member board. To find out how to testify, call the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission 785-296-5800.The board has until Sept. 19 to make a decision.
