Residents Get Others' IRS Letters
Some Kansas City metropolitan area residents got letters from the IRS with other taxpayers' names, addresses and Social Security numbers on them. They arrived in the residents' mailboxes in envelopes properly addressed, but the letters of intent stated how much the other taxpayers' stimulus checks would be and when they could expect them.Sandy Spear, who received someone else's letter, said it was "scary" that the IRS could make such a mistake. Patricia and Charles McRoy said the person whose letter they received was getting back more money than them.IRS officials admitted there had been a problem, but they weren't sure how the mix-ups happened. They said they planned to address the problem in the next few days, and wanted anyone who received other taxpayers' letters to return them to the IRS.
Spear and the McRoys planned to hand deliver the letters to their rightful owners.
