A local nonprofit organization can help Kansas City area job seekers find work for free.

Workforce Partnership has three career centers in the Kansas City area where job seekers can search an online job bank, speak to a career adviser and learn how to create resumes and interview for free.

The organization's executive director, Scott Anglemyer, said people who are out of work need to treat their search for employment like a full-time job.

"The temptation is when you're laid off ... to devote an hour a day to it or something like that and feel satisfied with it. Most job experts will say you really need to treat this like a full-time job and devote the amount of time on your job search that you would devote to working in an office or whatever setting," Anglemyer said.

Job seekers also need to focus on their transferable skills, he said.

"When you've been laid off, usually you've been laid off from an industry that's shrinking, and there probably aren't a lot of job opportunities in that same industry, so you really need to look at how you can transfer those skills to something else," Anglemyer said.

Staff at the career centers can help job seekers identify their transferrable skills.

"We're not just talking about things you did in your past job. We're talking about things you do in your life," Anglemyer said.

Project management skills, attention to detail and the ability to multitask, for example, are valuable in many different industries, he said.

"Those are valuable in so many different industries," Anglemyer said.
