KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Holiday Cab will operate on New Year's Eve this year. It's the 26th year of the program.

Cabs will be available from 7 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2008 to 3 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2009, said Yellow Cab General Manager Terry O'Toole.

The cab ride is free for the first $25, which is about 10 to 12 miles depending on traffic. About 90 percent of the rides end up being free, O'Toole said.

Cabs will pick up those in need of a ride from a public bar or restaurant and take them home, he said.

Yellow Cab will cover about half of the cost, which O'Toole estimates will be in the $7,000 range. A company called Central State's Beverage and a bar downtown known as Seven plan to pay for the other half.
