KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A KCTV5 News investigation exposed towing troubles in the revitalized downtown Kansas City. Now patrons will notice big changes near the Power & Light District. The KCTV5 News investigation revealed that car after car was towed out of downtown lots during major events in the Power & Light District. And after a public outcry, the city was forced to act.Thursday, the City Council responded to the predatory towing by voting on new rules to the city's towing ordinance."We were getting people from all over the country, people driving in from other states to enjoy and experience downtown, and that was being ruined by predatory towing, and we don't want anything, especially in these economic times, to be detouring people from coming into our city and spending very few discretionary dollars and enjoying themselves," said Councilwoman Cindy CircoUnder the new regulations:Towing fees are capped at $150 for a tow and $20 per day for storage. Signs must be prominently posted at eye level and include the international towage symbol. If a car is towed, it must be available for release from the towing company 24 hours a day. And, towing companies will be required to accept credit cards as opposed to only cash. One proposed regulation that did not make it into the ordinance was a requirement that cars towed in the city be stored at a site within the city limits. That requirement was left out.
