Soldiers Report High Migraine Rates

19 Percent Of Iraq Vets Have Debilitating Headaches

POSTED: 7:48 am CDT August 28, 2008

Soldiers report having migraines more often than the rest of the population, according to a reports in the journal Headache.

Researchers said that 19 percent of soldiers returning from a year or more in Iraq reported having had a migraine, and another 17 perecent may have had one.

They also found that 76 perecnt of officer candidates who said they had migraines had never been officially diagnosed.

Public information on the report did not say what the rate of migraine is in the general population.

The authors said that the disrupted sleep and eating patterns, fatigue and stress of miltiary life can exacerbate migraines.

"Our hope is that this research will improve the screening process for migraine in soldiers and increase education about migraine for soldiers and their health-care providers. U.S. military personnel should receive the best health care available, and improving the diagnosis and treatment of migraine will likely improve soldier's personal and professional functioning," said Dr. Erek K. Helseth Capt. Dr. Brett J. Theeler, who wrote the studies.
