Independence Teacher Accused Of Drunken Driving

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- A day after news of the arrest of an elementary school teacher on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, a police report revealed that the teacher was accused of drinking margaritas in the school.Independence police took the fifth-grade teacher at Blackburn Elementary School, Kathy Moegle, 55, into custody after they pulled her over at Missouri Highway 291 and Hidden Valley Road.The principal told the school resource officer that he had a situation with a teacher who had brought what he believed to be alcohol into the school, according to the police report.The principal thought the teacher had been drinking and when he confronted her and offered her a ride, she refused and left the school in her car, according to the police report.
The school resource officer caught up to her and pulled her over for failing to use a signal and crossing over the center line, according to the police report.The officer said he could smell the odor of alcohol in the car, according to the police report.The superintendent said school officials were taking the situation very seriously.KCTV5 News went to Moegle's home in Kansas City, Mo., but she refused to come to the door. Another family member said she wanted to issue a statement saying, "I'm devastated and very sorry for this misunderstanding."Her blood alcohol level was .178, twice the legal limit, according to police.Police recovered a gallon bottle of margarita mix containing alcohol from a classroom, according to the police report.The teacher was on paid leave Wednesday pending outcome of an investigation.
