Food Court Offers Students Choices

Shawnee Mission School District Offers Lunch Variety

High school students in the Shawnee Mission school district can expect a new look and a new menu when they head back to school this year.

Food in the district will be served in a food court-style of lunchroom starting this year.

Nancy Coughenour, with Shawnee Mission's food services department, said, "We're having Mom's Kitchen, we've got a Carb Situation, we've got Finger Foods, we've got a Sandwich Station. So anything the student could possibly get at an outside restaurant or fast food, they can sure get here."

District officials said that the additional food choices also offer healthier options for students, including whole wheat crust on pizza.

"We have no fried foods any longer. We have frozen vegetables, those have less sodium in them. If we do use canned fruits -- which we don't do very often, primarily they're fresh fruits -- if we do use canned fruits, they're packed in their own juice," said Coughenour.

Lunch costs $2.10.

Breakfast will be offered for the first time in all middle and high schools and some elementary schools.

Visit the Shawnee Mission district Web site to find school lunch menus.
