LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Police arrested a 20-year-old man last Wednesday after a caller reported suspicious activity at his residence.Cem Basoflas, of Lawrence, was charged with animal cruelty and criminal sodomy, according to a news release from the Lawrence police.Officers were called to a property in the 2100 block of Heatherwood Drive after a maintenance crew said they found what looked like a good deal of blood in the apartment of the University of Kansas student.Police said, after further questioning and a search of the apartment, that the abuse involved a dead dog. The dog was found, but not in the apartment, police said. Officers declined to say where the dog was found.Midge Grinstead, with the Lawrence Humane Society, said the case is so bad, she won't describe exactly what the suspect may have done."You can't tell people, because they will be haunted by what they hear," she said.Grinstead said the Humane Society was tipped off on the abuse when Basoflas brought in several animals with injuries. She said that since the case had been made public, the group has received a number of calls from people saying they sold their animals to Basoflas through Craigslist.com.
