KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A usually quiet Waldo neighborhood was turned upside down Thursday night during an incident that involved guns, dogs, an alligator and a 2-year-old.

And none of it surprised people living in the area.

Bill Womack was outside his house on 79th Terrace near Wornall Road when he saw officers storm his neighbor's house and watch several shots being fired.

"Bam, bam, bam, bam, five or six shots were fired off," Womack said. "I'm hiding behind this tree right over here, and then the next thing I know, it's all quiet."

It didn't take long for officers with the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department's Street Narcotics Unit to get things under control, but it wasn't easy either.

At about 3:30 p.m., authorities were serving a search warrant at a home in the area.

When they burst through the front door, three pit bulls charged them and two of the dogs were shot and killed, police said.

Meanwhile, three suspects inside all went running from the house and into Womack's yard.

"I said, 'Hey, did you just come out of that house over there,' and they wouldn't talk to me, so I said, 'Come here," Womack said.

Womack walked the suspect down to police. The two others didn't make it far either, and were both arrested.

Inside the house, officers said they found drugs and guns and an alligator, and when the suspects ran away, they left a 2-year-old behind.

He wasn't injured and was given to other family members.

Neighbors including Womack said despite the neighborhood being a nice one, they weren't at all surprised about what unraveled Thursday afternoon.

"Clientele, the people who go in and out of down there, and stuff like that, you know, I knew something was going to happen," Womack said.

The alligator and the surviving dog were turned over to Animal Control.
