NCAA Game Summary - Sam Houston State At Kansas

Lawrence, KS -- (Sports Network) - Todd Reesing was 23-of-38 passing for 356 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding a score on the ground, as No. 19 Kansas routed Sam Houston State, 38-14, in a non-conference clash. Kerry Meier had eight catches totaling 136 yards and found the end zone for Kansas (3-1). Dezmon Briscoe hauled in five passes for 124 yards and also made his way to the end zone in the win. Angus Quigley had 16 carries for 61 yards and a TD, while Jocques Crawford got 12 touches for 43 yards and a score. Rhett Bomar was 26-of-46 for 340 yards and one TD but also threw three interceptions for the Bearkats (1-1). Bomar also found the end zone on the ground once in defeat. Justin Wells grabbed eight passes for 111 yards and crossed the goal line. James Aston had five catches for 67 yards in the loss. After a scoreless first quarter, Darrell Stuckey intercepted a Bomar pass deep in SHSU territory and returned it 14 yards to the one-yard line, setting up a Reesing TD run that gave Kansas a 7-0 lead with 10:24 to play in the second frame. Isiah Barfield then picked off Bomar and ran it to the Kansas 34. On 3rd- and-12, Reesing found Meier for a 68-yard strike that made it a 14-0 affair with 7:02 showing on the clock. To atone for his previous mistakes, Bomar scampered eight yards into the end zone. The TD cut the deficit to 14-7 and capped the four-play, 36-drive that lasted just 1:20. Stuckey returned the ensuing kickoff to about midfield and Reesing found Briscoe for a 57-yard TD pass to make it a 21-7 game with 47 ticks left before the half. Marcus Herford returned the opening kickoff of the second half 26 yards and a personal foul on Shawn Weatherford advanced the ball to the SHSU 44-yard line. The Jayhawks made their way to the end zone, highlighted by a 31-yard reception from Briscoe. A two-yard TD run from Crawford ballooned Kansas' lead to 28-7 with 13:46 left in the third. Bomar then hit on 2-of-4 passes on the Bearkats' next drive, which resulted in a 46-yard TD catch by Wells. Bomar tallied 79 yards through the air to pull SHSU within 28-14 with 12:58 on the clock. Jacob Branstetter nailed a 24-yard field goal with 3:09 left to send the game into the final frame at 31-14. Quigley closed out a 16-play, 79-yard drive that lasted 6:51 with a one-yard TD to give the Jayhawks a 38-14 lead with 9:24 to play in the game.Game Notes:Prior to Saturday's loss, the only game played by the Bearkats thus far took place on August 28th against East Central Oklahoma, a contest that resulted in a 58-14 victory. Sam Houston State was scheduled to do battle with Prairie View last weekend, but Hurricane Ike caused that tilt to be canceled...The Jayhawks have now won 12 straight home games and 17 straight against non- conference foes...Saturday's tilt marked the first-ever meeting between Kansas and Sam Houston State on the gridiron.
